It’s the day after your wedding day and the hangover is starting to kick in. On the plus side you are waking up next to your new wife or husband and your thoughts now turn to the romantic honeymoon you are about to embark on.

Whilst insurance is probably the last thing on your mind, it is something you should certainly consider before you jet off around the world.

Insuring your wedding gifts

As you leave the honeymoon suite and start to pack the car with the many gifts you have received from family and friends, it suddenly dawns on you that much of this may not be covered by your contents insurance policy.

Not to mention all the special items you will have purchased for the wedding.

Think about it, you will have a high value wedding dress, wedding rings again costing upwards of £400, gift vouchers and money you will have received also.

That is why it is essential that as soon as you get home, contact your home insurer to update them with all the new items in your home especially if your home will be empty for the next couple of weeks whilst you enjoy your honeymoon.

Some insurers will offer special occasions cover. This is where they will automatically increase the sum insured by between five and twenty per cent for four weeks before and after an occasion such as a wedding. Contact your insurer to see if they have this type of cover but remember, this is only a temporary measure.

Insuring your honeymoon

Depending on your budget you may be going the Maldives or Malta, Las Vegas or London. Where ever you go on your honeymoon it is essential that you have adequate insurance.

Before you set off, you can compare travel insurance online to find a cheap quote with policies for couples starting from around £6.00.

This will cover you in the event that one of you is taken ill and needs treatment, involved in an accident, has property stolen, baggage cover and most importantly cancellation cover.
With cancellation cover, not only will the cost of your holiday be covered but also any pre-planned excursions you may have booked.

Top Tip – Remember, if you have changed your name on your wedding; make sure the name on the policy matches the name on your passport. This is essential in the event that you need to make a claim whilst abroad.
